About WordNet.PT
WordNet.PT is a linguistic knowledge database for Portuguese, developed at the
Centre of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon by
CLG-Group for the Computation of Lexical and Grammatical Knowledge,
under the supervision and scientific coordination of
Palmira Marrafa and benefitting from the scientific support of
Piek Vossen,
coordinator of EuroWordNet,
as well as of
Christiane Fellbaum, responsible, with George Miller, for the
Princeton WordNet,
the mother of all wordnets.
The database, which can be used in several domains in
Computational Linguistics and Language Engineering, such as machine
translation, search engines, information extraction, applications
for teaching Portuguese, among others, is organized according to the general
EuroWordNet framework,
a multilingual database integrating wordnets for several European languages.
Wordnets are lexical-conceptual networks organized around a set
of relations which have been shown by research to correspond to the mental
organization of lexical meaning.
The meaning of each lexical unit is deduced from its relative position
in the network, determined by the set of relations specified, glosses and
tags constituting additional information.
The basic unit in a wordnet is the concept. Each concept corresponds
to a node in the network and is represented by the set of lexical expressions -
atomic or complex - corresponding to it.
The present WordNet.PT
version has about 19000 lexical expressions, from different semantic fields.
The fragment made available here includes expressions from subdomains such as art,
clothing, geography, health, institutions,
living entities and transportation.
